چکیده

The ARGO-YBJ experiment, currently under construction at the Yang-baijing Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l.), consists of a single layer of ∼ 2000 Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) for a total instrumented area of ∼ 6700 m 2. The digital read-out, performed by means of pickup electrodes 6.7 × 62 cm 2 ('strips'), allows one to measure the particle number of small size showers. To extend the size range up to the knee region it is necessary to implement the charge read-out of the detector chambers. In order to achieve this goal each RPC has been instru-mented with two large size pads of dimensions 140× 125 cm 2. In this paper the performance of the prototype circuit devoted to the charge read-out is reported.

Feasibility of measurements of cosmic ray composition by means of RPC digital read out in ARGO-YBJ

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is currently under construction at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a.s.l.). The detector will cover 74 78m with a single layer of Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs), surrounded by a partially instrumented guard ring. Signals from each RPC are picked up with 80 read out strips 6:7 cm wide and 62 cm long. The strip read out allows one to count the number of secon...

Gamma-ray astronomy and cosmic-ray physics with ARGO-YBJ

The ARGO-YBJ detector, located 4300 m a.s.l. on the Tibet plateau, is a ground-based, full-coverage array of Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) covering a surface of 78 × 74 m 2 , surrounded by a guard ring of RPCs enclosing a total surface of about 11000 m 2. ARGO-YBJ was designed to detect extensive air showers generated by cosmic rays and gamma rays with primary energy greater than few hundred ...

First results on the angular resolution of the ARGO-YBJ detector

The ARGO-YBJ experiment at the YangBaJing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (Tibet, P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l.), will be operating over the next years with the aim of studying cosmic rays, mainly cosmic γ-radiation, with an energy threshold of a few hundreds of GeV, by detecting small size air showers. The ARGO-YBJ apparatus will consist of a full coverage array of dimension ∼ 74× 78 m realized with a singl...

The Trigger System of the ARGO - YBJ detector

The ARGO-YBJ experiment has been designed to detect air shower events over a large size scale and with an energy threshold of a few hundreds GeV. The building blocks of the ARGO-YBJ detector are single-gap Resistive Plate Counters (RPCs). The trigger logic selects the events on the basis of their hit multiplicity. Inclusive triggers as well as dedicated triggers for specific physics channels or...
